STEAM PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS

STEAM Programs at Henry Ford need Volunteers!
The Henry Ford Makerspace (Rm 15) has been expanded and is almost ready for students!  What is a Makerspace?: Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage in science, engineering and tinkering.
We are one of two K-5 RCSD schools lucky enough to offer this unique STEAM Education resource FREE to students. Please visit our Amazon Wishlist for donation ideas here. Also look for ongoing supplies needed posted outside the room (15).
We need volunteers!  We look forward to offering The Lunch Club for 3rd-5th graders again this year and hope to offer an after school Maker Hour to give students more time to build, design, create and explore!  If you or anyone in the community is interested in supervising students in the Makerspace, please signup here!
FREE Coding Clubs!  Our goal is to offer FREE after school Coding Clubs to K-5 students at Henry Ford!  Scratch and Scratch Jr are free and fun to explore. No coding experience required to lead coding clubs – tutorials and lesson plans available.  Please contact Becky Foutch with any questions. If you would like to signup, you can do so here.

pta SEPTEMBER Meeting 9.10.19

Our first PTA Meeting is under our belt and we are underway into an exciting school year. I’d like to point out a few key moments and send out my appreciation.

Ice Cream Social

Thank you to everyone who came to the ice cream social. I’m happy to have met new families and said hello to familiar faces. It was a wonderfully attended event and I hope families enjoyed their time together.

PTA Meeting

Thank you to those who came to the PTA meeting. Each grade level had a great showing of parent support. I missed recognizing the teachers and staff that attended that night so I want to do that here; Amy Barstad (Faculty Liaison, Kindergarten), Nancy Julien (5thGrade), Debbie Figaro (Kindergarten), Steve Borg (3rdGrade), Al Rosell (Principal) and Kelly Noriega (Vice Principal). It was a lengthy meeting as the first one of the year usually is. Unfortunately the district translator was not able to make it that would have made simultaneous translation possible. Thanks to Teresita Carlos for pitching in at the last moment.

Election of PTA Vice President

Teresita Carlos was voted in as our new PTA Vice President. She has two children at Henry Ford, 1stand Kindergarten, two at Sequoia High School and has been heavily involved for many years in the RCSD community. I very much welcome Teresita to the PTA family!

Budget Approval

Notably we approved the budget that will cover the needs of our growing school, keeping in mind that this year has some uncertainty as to additional expenses that may come up through the year. There are some unknowns having grown by 180 students. But we are in a good financial position with a strong start to our Direct Donation Drive that has brought in $17,000 so far. Huge thanks to families that have donated!

Committee Volunteers Needed

We have several committees that are looking for volunteers or those who are interested in learning the ropes and shadowing our coordinators.

  • Fall Fundraiser – Shadow coordinators (contact Colleen Lewcock, clewcock@hotmail.com or Corinne Tsui, corinne_and_kayla@yahoo.com)
  • Makerspace – Lunch Club or after school Coding Club volunteers (contact Becky Foutch, rfoutch31@hotmail.com)

Measure H Parcel Tax Campaign – Volunteer Needed

The PTA has endorsed and donated to the Measure H Parcel Tax Campaign as allowed under the California State PTA guidelines. This November voters in Redwood City will be deciding whether to approve a parcel tax of $149 per year for the next 12 years. The parcel tax will go towards reducing K-1 class sizes, teacher salaries, and more (see the Measure H Flyer). As a PTA we feel Henry Ford will greatly benefit in attracting and keeping highly qualified teachers and reducing large K-1 class sizes. We also want to show a unified front that RCSD schools are in support of our teachers and schools. It is very difficult to increase state funding so parcel tax measures are a way for the community to have some control in properly funding schools. The measure will be the only item on the all mail-in ballot. The campaign is in need of a volunteer to work between the campaign and Henry Ford. Training and a lot of help will be provided by the campaign. Please contact me (kking.206@gmail.com) if you are interested in volunteering. They do need someone to start as soon as possible.

Next PTA Meeting

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 8that 7pm. Meetings are typically around an hour and we will again try to get a district translator. We welcome everyone!

Keri King, PTA President

yes on measure h

Measure H provides local funding for our elementary and middle schools that can’t be taken by the State.  Thanks to our supportive communities and high-quality teachers, local student achievement has continued to grow.  however, the fact remains that our elementary and middle schools are among the lowest funded in San Mateo County and are now facing a $10 million-dollar deficit due to state mandated cost increases.  Measure H will provide an additional source of stable local funding to protect our students from additional cuts in the classroom, where it matters most, and ensure they are ready for high school and their futures.

Protect student success by voting Yes on H in order to attract and retain high-quality teachers, support reading and writing skills, maintain science, technology, engineering and math instruction, and reduce K-1 class sizes.  Measure H is fiscally accountable.  The funds stay local and cannot be taken by the state.  No money can be used for administrator salaries.  Independent citizens’ oversight and annual audits ensure funds are spent as promised.  Senior citizen homeowners continue to be eligible for an exemption.  Measure H expires in 12 years and cannot be renewed without voter approval.

For more information, see the flyer linked here.
